Phil Simborg is a well known figure in the American and online backgammon circuits. Also known as 'The Simborg Kid', Phil is often recognized by his outstanding Texan hats and his cowboy-like appearance. Started out as a bridge player, Phil has learned backgammon from the best players in the world including Oswald Jacoby (to whom Phil attributes his backgammon addiction), Dean Meunch, Neil Kazaross, Jake Jacobs, Nack Ballard and Kit Woolsey and played in various backgammon tournaments online as well as off-line.
Phil Simborg, who defines himself as "one of the most avid position-discussers in the game", will be analyzing backgammon positions exclusively for Online Backgammon Federation on a weekly basis. In a recent interview to an online backgammon resource, Phil has spoke about the importance of position analysis: "…every position illustrates a major concept that is critical to understanding the game… it is an intellectual challenge to determine what is the best checker play or cube decision, but even more, each exercise in this process helps you better understand the underlying reasoning behind the game. To me, the process of studying and improving my game is as much fun as playing the game."
