Jarvis Trophy Backgammon Tournament ResultsThe 2008 British Isles Backgammon Association Jarvis Trophy tournament was held on February 1-3, 2008 at the renovated Barcelo Daventry hotel. The winner of the main championship was John Hedge, who took home the prestigious trophy after winning in 6/6 matches.
The 18th annual British Isles Backgammon Association (BIBA) Jarvis Trophy took place at the beginning of February with 32 entrants. The Swiss format tournament consisted of two competitions: main and consolation, each one was held with 16 players. The 3-days backgammon tournament ended up with John Hedge victory over Paul Gilbertson. Since Mr. Hedge was not included in the "winner takes all prize", £255 of the prize fund will remain in BIBA's treasury until March 7th, when the Biba International Championship will begin.
The Jarvis Trophy event was held in a Swiss format, which consists of two competitions: main and consolation. The Swiss format tournament contains several rounds – 6 in the discussed backgammon event. Unlike elimination tournament, the tournament players remain in the game throughout the entire competition; on each round the face a different opponent, according to their score.
It often happens in Swiss tournaments that a player faces the same opponent more than once. In the 2008 British Isles Backgammon Association Jarvis Trophy, Paul Gilberston got to play against his friend and co-organizer of the poker event, Tony Fawcett twice. Mr. Gilbertson, who had lost to the tournament winner at the last round, finished the event at number 9. However, he was finalist at the poker event.
