Backgammon Game and Brain Studies

A recent survey revealed that backgammon players feel a significant development in their psychological and cognitive skills by playing the game regularly.

The survey also found that whether it be playing backgammon online or playing the board game, it helped to protect brain deterioration and also avoid many brain related diseases. This survey re-emphasizes results of past studies by scientists that have shown that mind games like backgammon, chess, checkers and others help to maintain healthy brain function.

Another survey of this kind was reported in December 2004 in a journal of Neurology revealed that playing backgammon for fun or for money and participating in intellectually stimulating actions helps prevent symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

A different study conducted on 469 people aged 75 and above was published in the NY times in June 2003. It indicated that the patients who were involved more then once a week in a game of backgammon were less prone to dementia.

These studies proved a basic connection in playing backgammon and improving the function of the brain. However, you should remember that the main motive for people playing backgammon is for social reasons rather then brain improvement! Therefore, some elemantry schools teach backgammon to improve mathematics and social skills of young students.
