Backgammon Ancestor is Strong in Brazil!A new version of the ancient board game Senet, which is regarded as the ancestor of backgammon, gains wide popularity among the children of Brazil.
Senet (sometimes spelled Senate) is a popular educational board game in Brazil. The new version of the ancient game that was apparently invented in Egypt about 5,000 years ago has been reborn in Sao Paolo by a small company of wooden board game.
Senate is regarded as one of the ancestors of backgammon, along with the Mesopotamian game The Royal Game of Ur, the Ancient Roman game Tabula, and maybe even others.
Senate, as far as we know, was a one-on-one race game played on a wooden board consists of 30 squares and dice. The contemporary version of the game, is also designated for two players. The Brazilian Senet board consists of 30 houses and 2 sets of 5 checkers each. Instead of dice, 4 sticks are used. To win the game, the player has to move his checkers to the last house before the other player. Sounds familiar?
I can't help but wonder, does it mean that we, humanity I mean, have reached the peak of our creativity and we have no choice but recycling old, in this case very old, games?
